Original WWII US Army 473rd Infantry Regiment theatre made pin back DI / DUI / Distinctive Unit Insignia / Crest. US Army 473rd Infantry Regiment was created very late in WW2, fighting in the Italian campaign from January 1945. Assembled from re-roled and re-trained Anti Aircraft Artillery (AAA) units no longer needed at that stage of the war, the unit was nicknamed'Flakfeet'. Because the 473rd were disbanded by August 1945 only theatre made insignia for the regiment exist.
Most 473rd DI were made. With two blade fixings, which once pierced through the uniform lapel were bent into place to hold the DI on. However the metal being used for these theatre made badges had a tendency to be brittle and the fixing blades would snap off. This DI has a far more functional pin back feature, making it an uncommon variation. The DI is in excellent condition, with the regiment's colours painted on to the stylised 473rd scroll which overlays the wonderfully detailed facsimile of the US infantryman's trusty M1 bayonet.
Die struck with an'R' hallmark, the pinback attachment hook has been bent at some pint in the DI's life, trapping the pin.
