This is a vintage piece of military surplus (army-specific) herringbone twill (HBT) fabric from approximately the early-to-mid 1940s. It measures out at approximately 44 inches long by 38 inches wide, just over standard yardage width-wise, and includes the selvedge ends to the fabric on both edges. Although the fabric lacks any specific identifying marks, such as stamps or labels, this piece was originally found with a variety of other WWII-era military shirts and jackets, and was most likely intended as surplus fabric for repairs of those jackets. This fabric would be excellent for repairs of any 1940's-era military jacket or shirt that utilized HBT fabric in some shade of olive drab (OD), as long as you weren't too specific about matching the exact shade. It should be noted that this particular piece of fabric is Army HBT, as opposed to USMC HBT, which is yet another way of dating and identifying the fabric.

The chevrons in the herringbone pattern here are not true chevrons, but instead non-slanting rows alternating with true slanting rows. That being said, HBT pattern differences, especially Army vs.

USMC, can really only be identified upon very close inspection, and this fabric could easily be used for repairing USMC garments without standing out too much. Please keep in mind that no attempt to clean or restore this fabric has been made, and as of now it is still in its found, unwashed state. There are a scattering of water stains throughout the fabric. The cut edges are somewhat frayed. Please note that no effort to clean or restore this piece of fabric has been made.
