Private Robert Rhodes is a member of the First Battalion, 179th Infantry, U. Army, which was recently commended by its commanding officer for carrying on Bravely and courageously in the face of overwhelming enemy strength.
A copy of the Citation has been received by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Rhodes, of 20 South William Street.
Rhodes, who is in the thick of the fighting in Italy, entered the Army with a selective Service group from district 389 last May. He has been overseas since last October. The Citation, signed by Major Harry W. Hughes of the 179th Infantry, is as follows.
Fighting over terrain which offered the minimum of cover and concealment, in extremely unfavorable weather conditions, under constant and heavy enemy artillery fire, and against numerical superiority, you carried on your missions in such a heroic manner as to command the respect and commendation of your commanding officer. Each individual has proven beyond all doubt that he is a true American soldier and has exemplified the highest traditions of that service. To you who fought with such loyalty, perseverance, and determination against the enemy must go credit for the successful defense of the beachhead line and of the beachhead itself. I wish to express my personal thanks and commend you for you gallantry in action. It is a source of much pride that I have such men serving under my command.
