This is a WWII Imperial Japanese Army commemorative hanging scroll set, painted and presented in 1938 to celebrate the early stage of the Second Sino-Japanese War (known as the "China Incident" in Japanese official documents at that time). The artwork features an auspicious combination of cranes, turtles, pine trees, and a rising sun, symbols of longevity, prosperity, and harmony in East Asian tradition.
